Which drone for 360 photography in 2026?

Almost every recent camera drone shoots a spherical panorama. The number that counts is not the frame count, it is the output resolution - and it decides sharpness at zoom.

Almost every recent camera drone produces a spherical panorama automatically. So the question is no longer “which one can do it”, but which one produces an image that holds up to zoom once the tour is online.

This guide deliberately compares criteria rather than models. Manufacturers publish sphere resolutions inconsistently, availability differs from one country to the next, and the model you can buy in eighteen months is not the one on the shelf today. The four criteria below outlive all of that.

The only number that counts: angular density

A spherical panorama covers 360 degrees. Divide its width in pixels by 360 and you get its angular density: how many pixels the image devotes to each degree of the field of view. That number, and it alone, decides whether the tour stays sharp when the visitor moves in.

What to measure, rather than what to read on a spec sheet

Manufacturers publish frame counts far more readily than output resolutions, and the two are not the same thing. Thirty-five frames stitched into 12,000 pixels beat thirty-three stitched into 8,000, but the relationship is not mechanical: it depends on the overlap and the focal length.

The method to check it yourself fits in one line: shoot a sphere, open the file, read its width. Divide by 360, and you have the number that will decide your tours.

The real lever is not the aircraft

That is the uncomfortable conclusion of this guide: changing model changes little, changing method changes everything.

Ground stitching produces outputs well beyond what any drone generates on its own. Thirty-two thousand pixels wide is 89 px/° - comfortably above what a 4K screen needs, and therefore above anything a visitor can see.

Three levers, in order of effectiveness, and none of them means buying a new aircraft:

The number of frames. More photos, more pixels to stitch. The full sphere mode is a good compromise; manual capture stays better when resolution matters.

Altitude. Flying lower does not change angular density, but it changes what each degree contains. At twenty-five metres, one degree covers less ground than at sixty. It is the most underrated lever.

The stitching software. A careful stitch fixes the seam, the nadir and the zenith, where the automatic mode often leaves a visible join.

What to actually check before buying

What else can shoot a sphere

A drone is not the only way to obtain an equirectangular, and a good tour often mixes sources.

  • A dedicated 360 camera - Insta360, Ricoh Theta, Kandao and others - on a pole or a tripod, for indoor scenes and ground-level viewpoints. Output is a native equirectangular, usually lower in resolution than a stitched drone sphere.
  • A camera on a panoramic head, for the highest-resolution ground-level viewpoints. The slowest method, and the sharpest.
  • A 360 camera mounted on a drone. Tempting, and generally disappointing: the aircraft itself ends up in the image and the resolution is soft. The stitched sphere mode gives a much better result, and it is what the trade actually does.

Whatever produced the file, the rule is the same: a 2:1 equirectangular loads, anything else does not.

Frequently asked

Is a sub-250 g aircraft enough for professional work? On image quality, yes. The limit is elsewhere: endurance, wind resistance, and above all the class marking, which decides what you are allowed to fly over.

What resolution should I aim for, as a minimum? Below 21 px/° - that is 7,500 pixels wide - the render is soft as soon as the visitor moves in, even on a phone. From 45 px/° up, the tour holds maximum zoom on a desktop screen.

Should the nadir be retouched? It is worth doing, but not to hide anything: under a drone there is no tripod, there is ground photographed honestly. See our article on the nadir and the zenith.

What file size does the platform accept? Up to 32,000 × 16,000 pixels and 500 MB per panorama, in JPEG, PNG, TIFF or AVIF. Beyond that, the file is downscaled automatically rather than rejected.
